Walk down any health aisle and you’ll see shelves packed with bottles — some labeled supplements, others nutraceuticals. At first glance, they seem like the same thing. But they’re not.And understanding that difference could be the key to improving your health, metabolism, and even your insulin sensitivity.

Supplements: Nutrient support

A supplement is meant to fill in the gaps — to give your body nutrients it’s missing.Think: vitamins, minerals, and protein powders. They help you meet your daily needs so your body can function at its best.If your diet’s low in vitamin D, you supplement it.If you’re low in magnesium, you add it back.

Supplements support the body’s normal processes — they don’t necessarily change how your body functions.

Nutraceuticals: Food compounds that do more

A nutraceutical, on the other hand, goes a step further. It’s made from bioactive compounds found in food that can actually influence how your body works at the cellular level.

In simple terms:

  • Supplements add nutrients.

  • Nutraceuticals act on biological pathways.

They’re designed to target how your body manages things like blood sugar, inflammation, metabolism, and energy use.

That’s what makes them so powerful when it comes to supporting insulin sensitivity — they don’t just help your body survive, they help it function better.

So how do you know if what you’re buying is the real deal?

Here’s the truth: not every product that looks “science-y” is legit. Some are well-researched. Others are just creative marketing.

To know the difference, look for these five credibility markers:

  1. ✅ Clinical trialsA true nutraceutical will have published studies showing measurable results — not just ingredient-level claims.

  2. ✅ Health Canada approvalIn Canada, all legitimate natural health products carry a Natural Product Number (NPN) issued by Health Canada. This means the formulation, ingredients, and safety have been reviewed and approved. You can search any NPN online to confirm.

  3. ✅ Physician recognition Look for products that are listed in PDR.net (Physicians’ Desk Reference) or recommended by healthcare professionals. This means the science holds up in a clinical setting.

  4. ✅ Certified for athletesIf you’re active or an athlete, make sure it’s NSF Certified for Sport® or third-party tested. That ensures it’s free from banned or contaminated substances — safe for anyone, including professionals.
